August/September Challenge Cup: Desensitisation and carrying an object
The Challenge Cup is really building momentum now and we hope this one will be another worthwhile training exercise! You will find a lot of lessons in the online training resource videos that can help you with this challenge and I’ve included some links below.
Combined Groundwork and Ridden Challenge:
Instead of two separate challenges for ground and ridden work this month we have merged the challenge with the aim being to create a happy horse with objects; whether this be on the ground or under saddle it’s more about what you can actually achieve in regard to the objects they will tolerate! Most of you who have been participating in the challenges are more than capable of showing some work both on the ground and under saddle and so please do both. Push yourself but do as much or as little as your horse is ready to do, don’t rush to large scary objects without doing your homework and building up to them. For your final video whether this be in Class 1 or Class 2 we’d love to see you use your imagination and show off the work you’ve done by doing a little party piece with a variety of objects!!
What we are looking for:
- A calm and happy orse in your polished video
- Able to work with a variety of objects happily
- Ideally show some work on the ground and under saddle (for those of you with ridden horses!).
- Push your comfort zone while remaining safe – please where hats and remember my horse training safety rules – your safety comes first, then your horse’s safety and finally comes horse training.
Entry Classes:
Class One – Best Performance – this is one video showing the wonderful work you’ve done and what a brave, confident horse you have produced using a variety of objects. Use your imagination, do some work on the ground and show ridden work too if you can, carry objects from one spot to another and so on…it’s up to you!
Class two – Most Improved – must show a before and after video. The first video will no doubt look a little messy to be honest, showing your horse as they first see the objects that you will be desensitising them to over the coming weeks. The last video is once you’ve done your homework and you feel your horse has made good progress.
Don’t forget I am in the forum to help anyone that needs it, you can post me a video and ask for help in the entry page.
Equipment: For those of you starting from scratch with desensitising it is well worth investing in a good rope halter and lead rein. Click here for details: Rope Halter

Thank you so much Jason. Like the others i have greatly enjoyed doing the first challenge and found it really beneficial – especially watching the videos (even tho it makes me cringe!) and receiving your detailed feedback. Getting a medal is the icing on the cake. Thanks also to Kay and everyone else for their support – it makes it even more fun.

Wow! Thank you Jason. We had great fun doing the challenge. I must say that I thought it would be much easier. But when faced with taking her out of her safe environment, it proved to be a very useful excercise. We’re now exploring the outside World a bit more. I love the challenges. Such a great way to improve your horse and horsemanship whilst sharing the experience with others. I think I may celebrate later. And Joss will have a treat.
As we’re showing off our medals, here’s one of me and Joss sporting our fabulous challenge cup. What a lovely surprise to get it in the post. Thank you Jason Webb and Sarah for making Yourhorsemanship so inclusive and fun.

🙂 I love all the encouragement and especially that the prizes aren’t just based on who did it best. I wasn’t able to take part in this months challenge, but can’t wait to try the April one.

“Mac and I would like to thank Your Horsemanship and Jason Webb and Sarah O’Neill for our bronze and silver medal for the March challenges.
I thought as Mac had done most of the work he should model them but as they wouldn’t go over his head we came up with another idea!
A very big thank you – feeling PROUD! Here I am with Mac in the field sporting my new Toggi polo shirt for Best Participant and medals! A great big thank you to Your Horsemanship for my prizes for the March challenges and of course to my great Steed!
The polo shirt was kindly donated by our sponsors Toggi
Angelika and Faith who have been Members of Your Horsemanship for three years.
