First groundwork session with a big, strong youngster
This video shows me working with a stunning, big young horse for the first time. He had been pretty quiet and easy at home, but came to us for two week's groundwork to prepare him for backing later in the year. Coming from a quiet yard, he found the move a bit overwhelming and is a combination of being quite worried with knowing he can use his strength against us humans! In this first groundwork session with him, I am working on my personal space and asking him to settle in different areas of the round pen, which he finds really hard. You can see from how little I have to move throughout the session, that he is a high energy horse who is focused on his surroundings rather than myself. I find this a really interesting video in terms of seeing a horse go through a range of emotions and my body language throughout what should be a very simple, but significant exercise for establishing a relationship between horse and human.
