Not everyone has their own horsebox or trailer to practise loading with. This video goes through the principles of loading, the equipment that I use and some exercises you can do with your horse without a vehicle.
It is important to make loading as easy as possible for you and your horse. This video gives some tips about how to set up for success.
Putting the loading groundwork into practice when loading on to a trailer
Before you introduce partitions, chest or tail bars, you need to teach your horse how to unload safely off the front ramp.
Using the process to load on to a trailer with the partition in
As you horse becomes more confident and settled on the trailer, you can introduce the chest and tail bars.
Desensitising your horse to the ramp is an important past process to go through in order for your horse to remain calm and confident on the trailer.
After you have prepared the environment, you can use the same loading process to load your horse onto a horsebox. Horseboxes have different configurations. The horses in this box travel facing backwards, so in this step, the horse is also learning to load and turn right.
Now your horse is loading into the box, the next step is to increase their desire to stay on the box
